A recent study published in the journal American Journal of Physiology–Renal Physiology, reveals that low levels of zinc are associated with high blood pressure. This is the first study that attempts to elucidate the association that had previously been observed between the development of hypertension and Zinc levels.. The researchers studied the activity of the sodium chloride cotransporter in rats that were fed a low and normal level of zinc.. The results reveal that the activity of the transmembrane protein is altered by the presence of zinc, increasing when zinc level is low. This work contributes to understanding the mechanism by which zinc deficiency causes deregulation of blood pressure., may have an important effect in the treatment of hypertension associated with other chronic diseases.
